REIKI Radiance
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a Japanese word representing universal life energy, the energy which is all around us. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words: Rei, or universal spirit (sometimes thought of as a supreme being), and ki.
Thus, the word Reiki means "universal life energy."
Reiki practitioners channel energy in a particular pattern to heal and harmonize. Unlike other healing therapies based on the premise of a human energy field, Reiki seeks to restore order to the body whose vital energy has become unbalanced.
Reiki energy has several basic effects: it brings about deep relaxation, destroys energy blockages, detoxifies the system, provides new vitality in the form of healing universal life energy, and increases the vibrational frequency of the body.
The laying of hands is used in Reiki therapy also as in spiritual healing.
Reiki is believed to have begun in Tibet several thousand years ago. Seers in the Orient studied energies and developed a system of sounds and symbols for universal healing energies. Various healing systems, which crossed many different cultures, emerged from this single root system. Unfortunately, the original source itself was forgotten.
Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Christian educator in Kyoto , Japan , rediscovered the root system in the mid- to late 1800s. He began an extensive twenty-one-year study of the healing phenomena of history's greatest spiritual leaders. He also studied ancient sutras (Buddhist teachings written in Sanskrit). He discovered ancient sounds and symbols that are linked directly to the human body and nervous system which activate the universal life energy for healing.
Usui then underwent a metaphysical experience and became empowered to use these sounds and symbols to heal. He called this form of healing Reiki and taught it throughout Japan until his death around 1893.
The tradition was passed through several grandmasters of reiki such as Dr. Chujiro Hyashi, Hawayo Takata, and Phyllis Lei Furumoto.
The Usui System of Natural Healing balances and strengthens the body's energy, promoting its ability to heal itself.
People have sought Reiki treatment for a wide variety of health-related purposes. Some examples include:
- Effects of stress.
- Chronic pain.
- Quicker recovery from surgery and anesthesia.
- Side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy for cancer.
- Lowering heart rate.
- Improving immunity.
- Mental clarity.
- Sense of well-being and/or spirituality.
- Enhancing the sense of peace in people who are dying.
A person does not need a special background or credentials to receive Reiki training. Many who seek the training are health care professionals. Students must learn the practice from an experienced Reiki teacher or Master, as it is not a therapy that can be self-taught.
There are four levels (or degrees) of expertise. Each level begins with an attunement, or initiation into that level.
Receiving an attunement is believed to bring the ability to access Reiki energy and to open what is conceived as a central core of energy in the body.
Training for each level typically takes 1 or 2 days. In time, some students undertake the effort to become a Reiki Master, which enables one to teach Reiki and perform attunements. This process can take a year or more.
Dr. Usui's actual 5 Reiki Principles :
- Observe throughout the day, with all your effort, the arising of anger, then look deeper for its true cause.
- Observe your mind throughout the day for the arising of worry and restlessness, look deeper at their roots.
- Be mindful, each moment of your day, appreciating the gift of life, find the right livelihood for yourself and be honest in your work.
- In your day, as you appreciate your life, be kind to yourself and to all beings.
Your mind and body will truly transform with the power of Reiki, practice daily, connect to the universal nature of mind, and develop these Reiki ideals everyday.
5 Principles of REIKI restated simply for today:
Just for today do not worry
Just for today do not anger
Honor your parents, teachers and elders
Earn your living honestly
Show gratitude to everything
4 Levels of Training To Do REIKI
Reiki I Training
The Reiki Master talks about the Reiki principles and about some of Reiki's history. Then the student receives attunements and the rest of the day is spent on practicing the hand positions.
After the attunement the student becomes a Reiki Practitioner and is now ready to channel Reiki, universal life force energy , through her/his hands.
These first attunements are also called the physical or awakening attunement. It is the initial opening of the healing channels and it often results in a detoxification process that takes up to a month. Your intuition will also develop and this will be helpful both when you practice Reiki and in everyday life.
Some people already have healing hands and will feel a stronger flow of energy and for others it is a first time experience. The Reiki flow can manifest itself in different ways but it is often felt as a warm or tickling feeling in the palm chakras.
Reiki can be practiced to heal others or as a self-healing.
Reiki II Training
The Reiki I Practitioner will now be introduced to three Reiki symbols and learns distant healing.
Suddenly, boundaries of space and time becomes transparent. With distant healing, Reiki can be sent to the past or future, or to heal someone that is in another place.
The fact that it can be sent to the past makes it possible to treat old traumas from this or previous lives. This is part of the total healing process where emotional and mental issues as well as physical are addressed.
After this attunement the student often goes through an emotional healing process that takes up to six month.

Two more symbols are also introduced in the Master Teacher Training, these symbols are both used when giving attunements and to make others Reiki Master Teachers. One of them are also used during healing.
