PROGRAM DESCRIPTION, SUMMARY AND OUTLINE

Self-esteem is the collection of beliefs or feelings that we have about ourselves, or our "self-perceptions." It is the Ego and how we define ourselves. It influences our motivations, attitudes, and behaviors and affects our emotional adjustment.

Our self-esteem develops and evolves throughout our lives as we build an image of ourselves through our experiences with different people and activities. Experiences during our childhood play a particularly large role in the shaping of our basic self-esteem.

Self-concept is how you see yourself. It is clear that to have a high level of self-esteem you will need to have a positive self-view and the opposite is also true. Low self-esteem can have devastating consequences.

  • It can create anxiety, stress, loneliness and increased likelihood for depression.
  • It can cause problems with friendships and relationships.
  • It can seriously impair academic and job performance.
  • It can lead to underachievement and increased vulnerability to drug and alcohol abuse.

Worst of all, these negative consequences themselves reinforce the negative self-image and can take a person into a downward spiral of lower and lower self-esteem and increasingly non-productive or even actively self-destructive behavior.

Objectives Participants will:

  • Learn to define self-esteem and identify how it is developed.
  • Be able to distinguish Poor versus Healthy Self-esteem.
  • Understand the role of self-concept as a factor in self-esteem development.
  • Be able to understand the role of self-awareness in ego development.
  • Be able to identify consequences of low and high self-esteem.
  • Learn behaviors that parents can do to raise their child's self-esteem.
  • Identify how to create an environment conducive to positive self-esteem.
  • Understand the importance of self-nurturance.
  • Understand the critical role played by parents to nurture positive self-esteem.
